Café de Flore

The Andy Warhol Diaries

Café de Flore is a Paris café recorded in two diary entries from January 1987. In these brief visits, it serves both as a place to pause during a winter arrival and as a point of encounter with an associate, giving it a small but distinct place in the diary’s account of travel through Paris.

A stop after arriving in Paris

On January 18, after arriving in Paris and checking into Hotel Lenox, Andy Warhol walked with Chris Makos over icy streets to Café de Flore. They had sandwiches and were the only customers there; they stayed until the café closed, with the diary recording a bill of $35. The entry places the visit within the first evening of the trip, alongside details of the cold hotel room and the contrast between the two travelers’ accommodations.

A later meeting

Two days later, on January 20, Warhol again went to Café de Flore, this time after running into Fred Hughes. The diary records that they had something there, costing $15, before Warhol bought magazines and tried unsuccessfully to reach several young people about dinner. The café thus recurs not as a described attraction but as a familiar Paris meeting place within the sequence of errands and social plans.

Place in the diary

The two visits give Café de Flore a modest, concrete role in Warhol’s travel record: it anchors an arrival-night meal with Chris Makos and a later encounter with Fred Hughes. The diary offers no broader account of the café’s history or character; its significance here lies in the way an ordinary place reappears across separate days, linking meals and company within the movement of the Paris trip.
